THE PLOT
The rain hit the rooftop of their small hobbit home and normally the soothing sound would have rocked Sam to sleep, but he was wide awake and unable to get any rest even if he closed his eyes and pretended to count the stars in the sky. It had been three years since Frodo had made his journey to the Undying Lands and he still missed his friend, could still remember the great adventure that they had made together. Only his friends Merry and Pippin truly understood what the four Hobbits had been through and they talked about it often. Sighing with some resignation, Sam sat up in bed and looked over at his wife, who was still sound asleep. Quietly he scooted to the edge and placed his feet on the floor and walked over to the window to peer outside.
The shire was quiet and all was well. It hadn't changed much over the past few years which was a good thing, to a Hobbit. However, Sam found himself growing impatient with it for some reason. He didn't know why, but he had this sudden feeling that something great was about to happen. What, he did not know, but he thought about it often. With his connections with many of his friends who lived outside the Shire, he had heard some of the latest and most intriguing news. He did not know how much he believed of it, but he wasn't exactly as naiive as he had once been. There were things happening in the deep of the Misty Mountains. Some speculated it was dwarf activity since dwarves were known for their magnificent dwellings under the heavy rock that made the foundation of the mountains. Others believed something darker was arising from the depths of darkness. What it could possibly be, they could only speculate. Some feared that the One Ring had managed to survive even after it had melted in the fires of Mount Doom. Sam didn't really believe this, as he was with Frodo and had seen the Ring disappear into the firey flames. All evil had come to an end that day and Middle Earth had been saved.
As Sam sat in the window he took a moment and stared out at the well trimmed yard and into the Shire. It was then that he heard a whisper in the air which made him tilt his head so that he could hear it slightly better. As he struggled to hear it was it was saying, his face furrowed into an expression of deep thought and just as he was about to begin to interpret what was being said, it vanished into the night. Sighing with a bit of frustration, Sam stood and headed back to bed thinking that he had only been imagining it. After all, it was silly of him to worry about strange whispers from the mountains....or was it?
